FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHERE ARE YOU BASED?
Saffrosa Kennel is based in Yorkshire, UK. I do NOT export.
WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THE BREED?
Here at Saffrosa, I have been involved in the Chihuahua breed from 2008 onwards. I began exhibiting in 2010 and had my first joint litter in 2013 under the Oskola affix. I accepted my first judging appointment in 2019 and have since undertaken a variety of appointments and exams to achieve B List/ JEP Level 2 Specialist status.
WHAT ARE THEÂ GOALS OF YOUR PROGRAM?
Like any other responsible breeder, I aim to produce puppies who fit the breed standard in both type and temperament. I actively compete in the show ring, using critiques and the help of my peers to help me make breeding decisions, along with using resources such as Early Neurological Stimulation and Volhard Aptitude Testing to help set my puppies up for life. Whilst the breed is versatile, I am solely focused on the conformation ring - I do NOT compete in any other venues.
HOW DO YOU PRODUCE HEALTHY OFFSPRING?
Unfortunately, health testing is uncommon for the breed in the UK, with the Royal Kennel Club only recommending BVA Eye Testing under 'Best Practice.' I therefore follow the OFA CHIC program's recommendations : Patella Scoring, a Basic/Advanced Cardiac Exam and Eye Screening. I do not DNA test our stock as there are no relevant hereditary predispositions that can be tested for in this nature.

In addition, our dogs have also participated in breed health research studies. In 2021, they participated in the Cambridge BOAS Research Group's advanced study into 13 further Brachycephalic breeds, with researchers coming to my home. Most recently, in early 2024, they participated in the Royal Kennel Club's cardiac research event for the breed.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF PURCHASING A PUPPY FROM YOU?
I ask that anybody interested in a puppy from myself contact me through my Contact page, then we can begin the screening process. This simply involves asking questions from either side and getting to know one another better in order to know if you are a suitable fit.
I do not have a waiting list nor do I take deposits until after 8 week evaluations - this is because I cannot guarantee if a puppy ideal to your home will be in the litter.
My puppies do not leave until 12 weeks and I do not allow buyers to select puppies. Instead I attempt to recommend which puppies would be suitable for your home based on temperament and your goals ie. pet or prospect.

I ask that all of our puppy buyers agree to a contract, agreeing to return any of my bred-bys to me in the case that they can no longer be cared for. Pet quality puppies will also leave with endorsements.

I have NO breeding plans as of current.
